Victory for Lancaster in Roses 2012

The overall score was 156.5 points for Lancaster to York’s 131.5. The result sees the Carter James trophy back at
Lancaster after being won by York last year. The two historic rivals have entered into a sporting contest every year since 1964, alternating between York and Lancaster.
The event involved 40 different sports with almost 1600 competitors at 120 matches. The Roseslive website was viewed by 11,000 people in 65 different countries over the weekend of May 4-6.
LUSU Vice President (Activities) Marc Handley said “Roses was an absolutely incredible event for LUSU and Lancaster University, and to win is just the most incredible feeling ever, especially after losing over in York in 2011. Every single competitor gave it their everything over the course of three days, and they were cheered on by an incredible number of people. It gives me great pride to be able to say that we did it!”
The first event of Roses 2012 was the Equestrian on Wednesday 2 May, won by both Lancaster teams. The Men’s 2nd Cricket on the Thursday went to York after Lancaster lost two wickets in the very first over of the innings meaning that on the Friday, it was all to play for.
Friday 4 May saw the event begin in earnest with many teams playing their first matches since before Easter. Standout performances have to go to Fylde A Netball and College Select netball for their dominance over their York counterparts, as well as Men’s Cricket 1sts who came back from 8/5 whilst chasing a target of 110 to win by one wicket.
On Saturday, Lancaster Women’s Rugby completed their 2nd Roses whitewash in as many years with victories in the 7’s and full 15 game by an incredible margin. Lancaster University Netball Club recorded victory in all three of their matches, and Climbing performed well on the new wall in the sports centre, with all 18 points being secured by Lancaster under the leadership of Jacob Senior.
Lancaster needed just 11.5 points on Sunday to reach the target of 146.5 which would secure the Carter-James Trophy once again. This was won by Lancaster Men’s Football 1sts whose match finished 3-1, securing the final 4 points needed for victory.
Lancaster University Head of Sport, Kim Montgomery said “It was fantastic to see the new sports centre utilised to capacity. It was a joy for the staff to work in such a lively atmosphere – we all look forward to the return of Roses in 2014.”
