06/05/2009 09:20:43

Cary Cooper and Paul Sparrow from LUMS have both been named among the Top 20 HR Thinkers in the world by Human Resources (HR) magazine. At a ceremony at Claridge’s in London, HR magazine announced the 50 most influential thinkers and practitioners in the industry.

In the list of the Top 20 HR Thinkers, Cary Cooper is ranked at number 6, and Paul Sparrow at number 14, making Lancaster one of only two business schools with more than one entrant in the league table. Excluding non-academics from the list, Professor Cooper is number 3 and Professor Sparrow number 9.

Professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at LUMS, Cary Cooper has written over 125 books on a variety of HR issues and was awarded a CBE for his contribution to organisational health. In 2008 he was awarded a Distinguished Professorship by Lancaster University and this year he launched the University’s Centre for Organisational Health and Wellbeing, supported by 10 major organisations.

Professor of International HRM Paul Sparrow, who is director of the Centre for Performance-Led HR, is at the forefront of research into International HR practice and general HR strategy. He has recently been invited onto the Editorial Board of the top US journal in the field - Human Resource Management.

The Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission Trevor Phillips is ranked 9th in the list of Top 20 HR Thinkers and the BBC’s Business Editor Robert Peston is ranked 20th.

Meanwhile, the magazine’s list of the 30 Most Influential HR Practitioners is headed by David Fairhurst of McDonald's – whose degree from St Martin’s was accredited by Lancaster - and Clare Chapman, Director General of Workforce NHS Service, who gained an MA in Management Learning from Lancaster University. She was previously Group Personnel Director at Tesco, Vice President of Human Resources at Pepsi Cola International’s Central Europe Operations offices, and Dean of Quaker University at Quaker Oats Incorporated.
