Students capture buzz of Higgs boson announcement in Geneva

Four Lancaster University students were in Geneva this week to witness first hand one of the biggest scientific announcements for a generation.

At a seminar held at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, the ATLAS and CMS experiments presented their latest results in the search for the Higgs particle. Both experiments see strong indications for the presence of a new particle in the mass region around 125 - 126 GeV giving scientists strong evidence that they have finally found the Higgs.

The four from Lancaster University Physics and Astronomy Society captured the anticipation in the run up to the announcement and filmed an interview with Philippe Bloch, Head of CERN’s Physics Department.

Oscar Scott, one of the Physics students on the CERN visit said:  “A trip to CERN is an inspiring visit and I would highly recommend it to any physics student. It was amazing to see the Higgs seminar while I was there, I could really feel the anticipation of all the researchers around me who had worked so hard to get the results.”

The other students were Matt Roscoe, Nicholas Barton and Matt Buckland.
