Honorary Doctorate

Professor George Pickett of the Department of Physics was awarded an honorary doctorate from Helsinki University of Technology in recognition of his work in low temperatre physics and his contribution to international cooperation promoting research at Helsinki University of Technology. Professor Pickett was asked to give the final speech at the banquet on behalf of the foreign honorary doctors. He received a standing ovation when he delivered his speech in 3 languages - English, Finnish and Czech. He said "Since Scandinavian after-dinner speeches tend a little to the serious side, by the time my turn came (the fifth on the night) the audience was more than receptive to a more British style".
