SHORT COURSES OPEN TO ALL: Department of Continuing Education

All courses take place on campus, with fees starting from £36 (with concessions of £31 and £13) for a 10-hour course.

Introduction to Archaeology (LAU0507)
5 weekly meetings and 2 days starting Wed 9 Nov 7 - 9 and Sat 12 Nov and 3 Dec 10 - 4. A beginners' course on the practices and techniques used by archaeologists to study the distant past.

Victorian Architecture (LAU0516)
5 weekly meetings starting Thurs 10 Nov 7 - 9. How the great Victorian architects transformed our townscapes.

The World of Victorian Illustration (LAU0514)
2 days Sat 19 & 26 Nov 10 - 4. A fascinating insight into the great literary artists of the Victorian era, including Cruickshank and Tenniel.

Introduction to the History of Music: Medieval to Classical (LAU0518)
4 days Sat 12 & Sun 13 Nov and Sat 3 & Sun 4 Dec 10 - 4. The history of western music from Plainsong to Mozart. No prior experience necessary, just a love of beautiful music!

NEW ON-LINE BEGINNERS' LATIN COURSE

Do you want to learn Latin in a new and exciting way? If so, you can now enroll on a short tutor-assisted on-line Latin course with the Department of Continuing Education. Using the Cambridge Schools Classics Project, your tutor will guide you through a variety of activities, printed materials and self-tests. You should find that you progress rapidly in beginners' Latin. This could be helpful for anyone working or studying in academic fields such as history, archaeology, languages or linguistics.

The course starts on Tuesday 18 October, from 6 - 7.30 pm and runs for 9 weeks. The course fee is £45. For more information about learning Latin, and the rest of our Languages for All programme, visit the Languages Fair on Friday 7 October, from 11 am to 2 pm at the Chaplaincy Centre.


A CONTRACT WORTH 20,000 POUNDS HAS BEEN WON BY THE DEPARTMENT OF CONTINUING EDUCATION to provide Higher Education Gateway events in 2005/6 for the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY).

DCE will work with University departments to deliver master classes and other workshops for NAGTY members from across the UK. The first master class (28 October) is on Writing Soap is led by Coronation Street writer Peter Whalley. The HE Gateway events will take place throughout the year and they complement the NAGTY summer school which will take place at LU from 6 to 19 August in 2006. The NAGTY HE Gateway offers informative, high quality learning opportunities to students with little experience of higher education. Events at Lancaster this autumn will include the following distinguished lectures and master classes (see below) which may be of interest to the children of LU staff. No prior knowledge is needed - just a keen interest in the subject. Lancaster Univeristy Debating Society Presents The Princess Alexandra Cup Inter Varsity Competition.

Saturday 3rd December 2005.

An event for both members and non-members.

From 11am on Saturday the Competition will begin in Princess Livingstone LT (bow north) among others. The final will be held in Count South LT at 7.15 pm - EVERYONE welcome to witness the prime talent of debaters from across the UK.

After this the society and the 30+ teams will be heading to the sugahouse for the celebrations. For more information see the society
