The Prime Minister has appointed Lancaster University's Vice-Chancellor Professor William Ritchie to the Board of Trustees of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

The National Maritime Museum illustrates the story of Britain and the sea and the theme of time through its collections. It includes the Queens House and the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Professor Ritchie OBE chaired the Government's investigation of the ecological effects of the major Braer oilspill in Shetland and has publications in coastal geomorphology and environmental monitoring, especially in relation to the oil and gas industry. He is also Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Sites of Special and Scientific Interest for the Scottish Executive, a member of the Fulbright Commission and Vice-President of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
