Lancaster tops North West table

09/07/2007 09:50:40

Lancaster University has been ranked as the top University in the North West by The Times Good University Guide 2008.

The Guide is one of the most authoritative and widely respected guides to universities in the UK.

Lancaster University was ranked at 27 out of 113 UK Universities – coming in ahead of all other universities in the North West.

The Guide, used by students and parents in the UK and abroad, ranks UK universities according to eight criteria, including student satisfaction, research quality and degree results.

Four subjects have shot up the rankings, with Drama up from 6 to 4, Iberian Languages up from 18 to 11, General Engineering up from 14 to 13 and Economics up from 17 to 16.

For some reason, the tables this year have not included rankings for top scoring departments at Lancaster such as Social Work (1st in the UK last year), American Studies (8th), Linguistics (10th) and Italian (20th).

Lancaster's Times Good University Guide rating comes on the back of a strong performance in The UK University Guide which placed LancasterUniversity 19th out of 113 Universities - and top university in the North West.

Lancaster's high standing has also been confirmed on an international platform this month as, for the fifth year running, it was ranked among the top 200 to 300 Universities in the world by the ShanghaiJiaoTongUniversity league table of world universities.

Lancaster University Director of Marketing and Recruitment John McGovern, said: “We are delighted to have further confirmation through the various league tables that Lancaster is one of the best universities not just in the UK but globally.

“Yet again LancasterUniversity has been placed among the best Universities in the country and among the top 300 in the world.

“Lancaster has built up a strong reputation for world-class research and excellent teaching performance and we are delighted to see the University being recognised in this way.”
