Excellence in teaching

Mike Winstanley from the History department has been shortlisted for this year's National Teaching Fellowship Scheme.

The fellowships, part of HEFCE's strategy for raising the profile of teachers and teaching in universities are worth £50,000 to the winners.

Lancaster has been successful in each of the two years of the scheme so far, with Mick Short from Linguistics winning in 2000 and Susan Armitage from the Higher Education Development centre in 2001. Only 20 awards are made each year.

Mike's plan is to develop further his links between the region and current and potential students by exploring the rich resources for student research to be found in county archives and similar resources. He hopes to develop various materials and to attract more amateur historians into the university. The outcome of the panel's decision will be made known towards the end of May.
