PROFESSOR GEOFFREY LEECH, Emeritus Professor of English Linguistics, has been successful in obtaining a 2003 Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship - one of approximately 30 offered for the UK. The fellowship will enable him to continue funded research on Changing English Grammar in the Twentieth Century.
The groundbreaking research, on which he is working along with Nick Smith, is a corpus-based study of recent change in the grammar of written English (1961-1991). The project, funded by the AHRB, is collaboration with Christian Mair and Marianne Hundt at the University of Freiburg, Germany.
