Doctor of Science (honoris causa) John Richard Krebs received an honorary degree from Lancaster University during the degree ceremony celebrations in July.

He is a scientist who has achieved distinction in research and in public service. His scientific work created behavioural ecology as a quantitative and experimental field of study. This achievement led to his appointment as the Chief Executive of the United Kingdom Natural Environment Research Council, which leads development in environmental research through the allocation of government funding. His skill in handling the boundary between government and science, and in the management of scientific organisations, led to his appointment as Chair of the United Kingdom Food Standards Agency, where his rigorous evidence-based approach has provided a transparency that has built public confidence in this important institution.
