Lancaster Wins War of the Roses 2004
Sportsmen and women at Lancaster University battled their way to victory this weekend in an historic sporting struggle against the University of York.
Thousands of athletes and spectators flocked to the campus for the three-day contest hosted by Lancaster University featuring sports from hockey and rugby to basketball and fencing.
On Sunday afternoon the final score came to rest at Lancaster 145 points, York 107 points and Lancaster University walked away with the coveted Carter-James Trophy.
Boasting more than 90 different fixtures, nearly 2,000 athletes and 5,000 spectators, Roses has grown to be one of the most popular sporting events in northern England.
The two universities have entered into a sporting battle every year since 1964, alternating between York and Lancaster. This year marked both the 40th anniversary of the competition and of Lancaster University itself.
The May Bank Holiday weekend also saw Lancaster University holding its biggest charity event of the year. This huge community event on Campus had something for all the family and aimed to raise thousands of pounds for local charities. The Fun Day, held on Sunday, May 2, included the Lancaster Fun Run, falconry displays, demonstrations by the RNLI, Police and Fire Brigade, fete attractions and much more.
Coverage of the entire weekend’s events was provided by campus student radio Bailrigg Fm. The station secured a special extended license for the Roses weekend to broadcast to the Lancaster and Morecambe area for five days.
