First woman of football to speak at Lancaster
Karren Brady ‘the first woman of football’ is set to meet some of the region’s entrepreneurs at Lancaster University this month.
Karren, who is the CEO of Birmingham City Football Club and one of Sir Alan Sugar’s guest interviewers in the popular TV show The Apprentice, will share some her considerable expertise at a business leadership event on August 20.
Karren will be delivering a taster masterclass session as part of a recruitment event for the programme, which will start its next cohort at the end of September.
LEAD is a ten month programme designed by Lancaster University Management School for owner-managers of small to medium sized businesses.
By concentrating on both the business and the personal development of the owner-manager, the programme provides a framework to increase profitability, diversify and grow the business.
To date LEAD has worked with more than 170 companies and 90 per cent of them have seen an increase in sales turnover, employment, productivity and profits. On average LEAD participants increase their turnover by £200,000.
Karren Brady began her career with LBC Radio at the age of eighteen. She moved swiftly to Saatchi & Saatchi as Account Handler, joining David Sullivan’s Sports Newspapers in 1988 where she became a Director within twelve months. This meteoric rise prepared her for new role as ‘the first woman of football’.
She has attracted much media attention as the highest placed woman in football and was the subject of an hour long BBC 1 documentary entitled ‘Inside Story - The Real Life Manageress’. She has also hosted her own TV show - ‘The Brady Bunch’- and written four books -‘Brady Plays the Blues’, ‘United’, ‘Trophy Wives’ and Playing to Win - 10 Steps To Achieving Your Goals.
She has made constructive changes at Birmingham City and her community projects such as the Kids a Quid scheme, Family Stand and Community Classroom have been emulated and copied elsewhere. In October 2007, Karren was named Midland's Business Woman of the Year. Karren is a non-executive director of Channel 4, Mothercare Plc, Sport England, and Chairman of Kerrang!
The event takes place on 20th August, 18:00 - 20:00 at Lancaster University Management School.
