Tribute to Professor Costas Evangelides
Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings writes the following tribute to Costas Evangelides who died before Christmas:
Professor Costas Evangelides first graced Lancaster with his presence in 1972 when he registered for his PhD. Since that time Costas has been the truest of friends to the University and one of its most famous alumni. Over a period of 20 years Costas brought more than 1000 future teachers and professors from Athens University to Lancaster. In the process he came to know many key staff from across the University, including 3 Vice-Chancellors. He also was responsible for the setting up of the Alumni Association in Greece and was its first President. In recognition of his contribution both to Lancaster and to English teaching in Greece, Costas was awarded with an honorary LLD degree in 2002.
Costas was a larger than life character and no one who met him could fail to be impressed by both his energy and his warmth. He gave so much to so many people not only in Lancaster and Greece but across the world of academia.
I am also aware of the love and pride Costas had for his family. At this most difficult of times, our thoughts are with them.
