Cast Iron Sculptures on Campus

A series of monumental cast iron sculptures by Charles Hadcock are currently on display in Lancaster University grounds.

The five sculptures form part of a larger exhibition at the Peter Scott Gallery, Lancaster University, which has been part funded by Lancaster University Friends Programme. The exhibition runs until June 2 but the sculptures will remain on campus over the summer until September.

The large-scale pieces include Sesqui, Accord and Sextus, which are made from a multiplicity of identical elements locked and bolted together. The pieces curve and flow and make reference to the pace, tone and motion in music.

They are accompanied by a display of smaller scale sculptures, maquettes for works such as ‘Passacaglia’ - a 20 tonne cast iron sculpture commissioned for Brighton beach - and a selection of recent prints and drawings. The exhibition is a unique opportunity to see a wide range of Hadcock’s work, including many new pieces.

Charles Hadcock frequently works to commission and his creations can be seen at Goodwood Sculpture Park, Brighton beach, Gatwick Airport, Canary Wharf and Holland Park in London, among other locations.

He was born in Derby in 1965. He studied fine art at Gloucestershire College of Arts and Technology (1984-87) and at the Royal College of Art, London (1987-89), specialising in sculpture. His first solo exhibition was held at 249 Long Lane, London in 1991. Since then he has had some eight solo shows, and has been included in well over twenty group exhibitions from 1989. His residencies include Atelier de les Arques, sponsored by the British Council in France, 1999.

Themes that have contributed to the development of Hadcock’s sculpture include alchemy, the natural world, geology, music, mathematics, poetry, architecture and engineering.

The Charles Hadcock exhibition will be opened on Thursday 4 May at 7pm by Bill Woodrow, a Royal Academician and one of Britain’s leading sculptors.
