MBA Student wins Student of the Year
A student from Lancaster University Management School has won the Association of MBA's Student of the Year Award beating off competition from most of Europe's top business schools. This is the second time in three years that a student from Lancaster University Management School has won this prestigious international award.
Lancaster student Mike Goggin won the award against fierce competition from finalists representing London Business School, IESE Business School (Barcelona), and the Instituto de Impresa (Madrid). Mike has recently completed the Executive MBA programme at Lancaster, having been sponsored through the programme by his employer, Railtrack Plc.
Mike's story is one of remarkable courage and determination. Diagnosed with a serious illness after starting the Executive MBA he was later a victim of burglary in which he lost his personal computer including all his course files. To cap it all he was injured as a passenger in the Selby rail crash last year, a trauma with which he is still learning to cope. Despite all this Mike not only successfully completed the MBA programme, but also made a major contribution to helping other students with their learning. The award was presented at the Association of MBA's Annual Dinner, held in London on Thursday 8th November. The judging panel, which included senior executives from the private and public sectors, said they were "incredibly impressed" by Mike's enthusiasm, determination and well-rounded approach to management. This is the second time in three years that a LUMS student has won this prestigious international award. In 1999 Full Time MBA student Gill Hall (now an International Financing Specialist with IBM) won against equally prestigious competition-an achievement of which the School is very proud. Professor Sue Cox, Dean of Lancaster University Management School, commented: "I am personally delighted at Mike's success. His achievement is a credit to his own determination and professionalism, and reflects the high quality of students on Lancaster's Executive MBA."
