LU to host forum on tourism on Cumbria and Lancashire

06/08/2001 10:45:03

Lancaster University is hosting a forum, to facilitate a strategy to recover and renew competitiveness in tourism. Further development of tourism is key to the economic regeneration of Cumbria and Lancashire, but has been severely affected by the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic.

The forum will take place on Wednesday 20th June 12 noon - 4.30 pm at the Lancaster University Conference Centre. The Forum, organised by the Centre for North West Regional Studies, aims to explore key themes for tourism in the region: training, marketing, planning, competitiveness and to bring together individuals and agencies from both private and public sectors, as well as academics, who are concerned with tourism in the region. The keynote speaker will be Mike Shields, Chief Executive of the North West Development Agency. The forum also aims to develop a collaborative agenda for tourism in the region at this critical time in respect of the foot-and-mouth epidemic.

Included in the £10 fee for this event are lunch and refreshments, and a free copy of the position paper that will subsequently be published by the Centre for North West Regional Studies. This will summarise the presentations and the joint strategy for recovery and renewed competitiveness, which we hope will arise out of the discussions.
