6:00pm – Helen Bendon and Jessica Thom with Professor Rachel Cooper will discuss the importance of art to research interpretation, dissemination and public engagement.

Drawing upon research into city life, this exhibition celebrates the riches and the tensions of modern cities as places to work, entertain and live.

The exhibition continues the work of video artist Helen Bendon and photographic artist Jessica Thom, working alongside three research teams: VivaCity2020, AUNT-SUE and InSITU. Working together a picture of modern cities has emerged complete with beauty, excitement and modernity, but also isolation, impotence and myth.

Helen uses video to explore the interweaving of narratives through urban landscapes whilst Jessica collects resident’s photographs and merges and manipulates them to create a portrait of two cities: Manchester and London.

Urbis, Manchester’s museum of the city, is pleased to be hosting this exhibition. For further information telephone 0161 605 8200 or visit www.urbis.org.uk.

The Endurance
The Endurance

The Endurance draws on the tradition of the travelling player and the expeditions of Scott and Shackleton to tell a tale of survival in the face of impossible odds and a friendship glued together by tea and mint-cake.

‘Two old men haul their broken piano along rusty train tracks. Their energy is spent and the faceless entity that is in pursuit is almost upon them, and yet, round the next bend, maybe...’

The 3 Little Pigs
Mishimou

The 3 Little Pigs
The 3 Little Pigs

Featuring a dangerous and very elaborate rescue operation, puppet nudity, alcohol, death and a tree, this gloriously eccentric show subverts the classic children’s tale of the 3 Little Pigs for a grown-up audience. Told with the dramatic application of shadow, light and colour, animations and puppetry, this show is funny, sinister and very naughty.

Manchester-based Mishimou was formed in 2003 by Rachael Ayres & Maria Ratcliffe, who shared a desire to create multi-layered adult puppetry theatre. They also like to collaborate with animators, musicians and magicians in developing new work and for this show, animator and illustrator Paddy Molloy has created an amazing anthropomorphic landscape using a textured hand drawn style.

For audiences aged 14 years and over.

Muttnik – The First Dog in Space
Muttnik – The First Dog in Space

A theatre show for children over 3 and childish adults, devised and performed by Niki McCretton.

Muttnik is living at the Russian Space Centre and has been selected to be the first dog in space! She learns to fly a rocket, to parachute jump, to dance in zero gravity and to go ‘where no dog has gone before’. Will she skate on the rings of Saturn and what will it be like to dig holes on the moon? Muttnik is told without words, through movement, gentle humour, music and a soundscape. The set consists of a simple construction that transforms into a rocket. The costume, set and props are colourful, inventive and charming. (the show lasts 50 minutes)

Muttnik Workshop: The show is accompanied by a fantastic practical workshop (aimed at ages 7-9). This is a chance for children to come and invent stories from the true adventures of the first living creature to go into space, using their bodies and imaginations. There will be an opportunity for parents to see what has been created at the end of the session. Niki McCretton is an experienced teacher of all ages and is skilled in drawing out children's ideas and helping them to create performances. The workshop is followed by art activities and a light lunch until the show at 2pm.

£6 / £4 concessions, Muttnik Workshop 10am, Saturday 12 May (for children aged 7 – 9) Workshop tickets £2.50 (must be pre-booked)

Space 50

A Theatrical Voyage to Mark 50 Years of Space Travel. SPACE 50 promises to engage from ignition to landing, unpicking our astonishing journey to the heavens since 1957.
